A certified translation is an official translation of documents, verified by the signature of a qualified translator. This type of translation is accepted by all government bodies in the United Kingdom, including the Home Office, universities, employers, and legal institutions. In the UK, a certified translation is required rather than a notarised or sworn translation, as is customary in some other countries.

When is this type of translation required?

A certified translation of documents is required if you:

  • are submitting documents to obtain a UK visa (including Homes for Ukraine, the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme (UPE), etc.), as well as for naturalisation purposes;
  • are applying for admission to a UK educational institution;
  • are starting employment in the United Kingdom;
  • are preparing legal or financial paperwork;
  • are undergoing the process of degree or qualification recognition (through ENIC, Ecctis, General Medical Council) or in other situations.

Who is authorised to provide certified translation services?

The translation must be carried out by a qualified translator — a professional with relevant education or proven professional experience — so that it is accepted by official authorities in the United Kingdom (such as the Home Office, universities, courts, etc.). Such a translation must include a statement of accuracy confirming that the translation is complete and accurate, the translator’s signature, the date, contact details, and an official stamp.

Membership of professional bodies such as the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting) and the CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists) is an important indicator of a translator’s qualifications and reliability in the United Kingdom. It confirms that the professional meets high standards, adheres to a recognised code of ethics, and is committed to ongoing professional development. Holding such membership increases the confidence of clients and official institutions, as it demonstrates that the translator has recognised professional training, relevant experience, and a strong commitment to quality.

2. Providing Documents for Translation
To carry out the translation, I will need:

  • Scanned copies or high-quality photographs of all relevant pages of the documents. The images must be clear and show all text, seals and stamps in full
  • The names of the individuals mentioned in the documents in Latin script. If you do not have an existing transliteration of the names, they will be rendered in accordance with the official transliteration rules
  • Any preferred terminology, where this is important for the accuracy or consistency of the translation

There is no need to send the original paper documents — in the UK, certified translations can be completed online.

3. Translation and Certification
Once I have received the required documents, I will complete and certify the translation. The final PDF will include:

  • A digital copy of the original document
  • The translation bearing my professional stamp
  • A certification statement

4. Receiving the Completed Translation
The completed translation will be sent to you electronically as a PDF. This format is generally accepted by institutions throughout the UK. If required, I can also provide a hard copy and send it by post. This service is available at an additional cost.
